MSU Texas hosting Navy Week Events along with Family Weekend
Along with Family Weekend, Midwestern State University is hosting Navy Week events from September 18-20, beginning with a free concert from the Navy Band Southwest on Thursday evening.
The Navy Band Southwest will perform a free concert to salute the students, citizens, active duty personnel, and Navy veterans of Wichita Falls. The concert will take place from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, September 18, in Akin Auditorium.
The Navy Band Southwest, based in San Diego, Calif., originated in 1923. The band takes pride in upholding its rich tradition and promoting the pride and professionalism of today’s United States Navy, staging more than 400 performances per year, and featuring highly-trained professional musicians. On Saturday, the band will treat football fans at pre-game and halftime of the MSU Texas versus Eastern New Mexico contest. Kickoff is at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20.
The MSU Football-Navy Week Tailgate is from 3-5 p.m. at the Memorial Stadium parking lot. Rear Admiral Walker, the Office of Naval History, the Office of Naval Engineering, and First Command will make public outreach engagements between students, Wichita Falls residents, and Navy veterans. Rear Admiral Walker will also execute the coin toss prior to the game.
The San Diego Drill and Ceremony Team will conduct a set followed by the National Anthem played by the band in conjunction with the Gainesville Red River Sea Cadet color guard presenting the colors. The San Diego Band will present a halftime set of contemporary music, followed by the MSU Texas Golden Thunder Marching Band.
Family Weekend also has an action-packed schedule with Bingo at 6 p.m. Friday at Legacy MPR, and Karaoke from 8:30-10 p.m. Friday at Clark Student Center’s Comanche Room. On Saturday, Brunch is at 9 a.m., followed by family activities at Clark Student Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The women’s soccer game at Mustangs Park kicks off at 1 p.m.
