MSU Texas encourages commuter students to connect on campus

Midwestern State University is home to a wide range of students. Some come from different countries, some from other states and regions of this country, and some others who have called the Wichita Falls area home for years.

MSU Texas is an excellent option for area students pursuing higher education, and commuters always have support on campus. This welcoming feeling has been the experience of John Morrell, a first-year student from Wichita Falls who is studying mechanical engineering.

Morrell knew he would be attending MSU for some time because MSU was a “family school.” Both Morrell’s older sister and brother attended MSU and have preached its quality since their time as students.

Morrell’s brother also studied mechanical engineering during his time at MSU and has been able to coach Morrell on how to study and make the most of the resources MSU offers. Morrell said his brother will even be returning to MSU to pursue his Master’s soon.

“My Family has a lot of history graduating from MSU,” Morrell said. “My parents didn’t – I’m first generation – but my siblings have.”

Morrell said MSU is a great fit because he lives very near campus and has plenty of transportation options, such as driving, taking the bus, or even walking. He mentioned how clear and well-mapped bus routes are in Wichita Falls and how easy it is to find parking, compared to other campuses.

Morrell feels that the campus is accessible in terms of its relation to the rest of the city. He believes the central location of MSU near major roads, restaurants, and shopping makes it convenient for people who must leave classes and drive straight to work.

Morrell attended the Food Truck Friday and Commuter Carnival event held on March 20 in the Quad. It was one of the first commuter events he attended.

He explained that crowded and noisy events can make him feel overstimulated, but the planning behind the Commuter Carnival made it feel spaced out, accessible, and comfortable. After attending the carnival, he is eager to try more campus events, he said.

“I feel like the events are like how the classes are designed – really down-to-earth and planned with the students in mind. It really helps to get involved. It helps with feeling involved,” Morrell said.

Along with accessibility and engaging events for students that don’t live on campus, Morrell added that one of the biggest benefits of attending MSU is that classes are small and personal, teachers who are knowledgeable and helpful, and the options for class schedules make attending college an option for people with all types of schedules. While Morrell said he’s still adjusting to college life and the intense curriculum and rigid schedule, he has thoroughly enjoyed his time at MSU so far. He looks forward to embracing more of the student experience moving forward and continuing the family tradition of encouraging getting an education at MSU.
