Copelands honor parents with awards to help education graduates

Midwestern State University graduates who are pursuing careers as teachers will receive a helping hand in the form of an award that covers the cost of licensure exams plus a scholarship to help set up their classroom.

Laurie and David Copeland (MSU '79) created the Heroes in Education Award in honor of David’s parents, Unell (Crampton) and Ruben E. Copeland of Iowa Park, Texas. Although the elder Copelands did not have high school diplomas, they placed a high value on earning an education. David graduated from MSU Texas with a bachelor’s degree in accounting, then earned his Doctor of Jurisprudence from Texas Tech University’s School of Law.

The Copelands’ gift honors the value and emphasis that David’s parents placed on education, and it highlights the vital role that educators play in shaping all other professions and launching students on a path to success.

“Laurie and I are proud to support tomorrow’s teachers with the Heroes program. We know how challenging, but also how critical, teaching is. A teacher’s role in helping students start the path to realizing their dreams is invaluable,” said David Copeland. “Neither of my parents graduated high school, but they placed an uncompromising value on education, and I owe my education and career to them and the many teachers that encouraged and inspired me over the years.”

The award includes the costs of the initial required licensure exams for teacher candidates, a $600 scholarship upon confirmation of graduation, and a special graduation cord that commemorates each recipient’s dedication to education.

“With this support, we can empower the next generation of educators, ensuring they have the resources they need to succeed and make a positive impact in our schools,” said Leann Curry, Dean of the West College of Education. “Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Copeland, for believing in our future teachers and investing in the heart of education.”
