MSU Student Media Win 29 Awards at Texas Intercollegiate Press Association

Midwestern State University’s student media won 29 awards in April at the annual Texas Intercollegiate Press Association competition in San Marcos.

MSU’s student newspaper, the Wichitan, was awarded second place for overall web site design and third place for overall general excellence, while MSU’s yearbook, the Wai-Kun, was awarded third place for overall excellence.

Junior mass communication major Madisyn Butler won one of three TIPA scholarships.

Individual students won nine first-place awards, three second-place awards, eight third-place awards, and six honorable mentions.

Jim Sernoe, chair of the Mass Communication Department, said he continues to be proud of what the students are able to accomplish. “I keep saying we can compete with anyone,” Sernoe said, “and year after year we prove that at TIPA.”

Those earning third-place awards included:

Juliana Abril, video news story; Juliana Abril, Spanish opinion writing; Juliana Abril, Tiffany Haggard, Micah McKinnie, and Beyonce Wilson, video documentary; Jessica Binzari, sports game story; Emily Copeland, Casee Harl, and Cecil Witherspoon, yearbook feature page design; Hunter Doughty, Casee Harl, Shun’de Hooks, and Mariana Vela, video program production; George Svoboda, in-depth reporting; and Roger Taylor, video advertising.

TIPA is a statewide organization of journalism and mass communication programs with a membership of about 75 universities.
