Wichita Falls Museum of Art providing family fun for spring break
The Wichita Falls Museum of Art (WFMA) has been a part of the Wichita Falls community since the 1960s, and it became a vital part of Midwestern State University's family in 2005.
In that time, it has provided the community with a diverse variety of art to appreciate, and a multitude of events and classes to participate in. Many of these events are free and accessible to the whole community, with the simple goal of inspiring creativity.
This week, the WFMA is offering a series of free artistic courses for families in the community to enjoy during the week of spring break. The courses involve various art styles, in which people learn how to execute and then make their own rendition of. The art forms are simple enough that a child may attempt, but complex enough to provide an outlet for entertainment and creative liberty to an adult.
“This year we thought, we’ll just do it for families,” WFMA Education Curator Jennifer McLarty said. “We invite families to come out and do this, and go inside to see the gallery as well. Inside, there’s a fun little scavenger hunt to do, and so they will see lots of artwork.”
Each course will take place on the patio of the museum, looking out to the lake (weather permitting), to inspire those who attend through the beautiful spring landscape. As the waterfowl enjoy warmer waters, the red buds begin to bloom, and the soft sunlight illuminates the scene, anyone who attends is sure to find an element of nature that inspires them. Several of the course focuses are centered around nature, to connect the projects to the “Framing Nature: Animals through Art” gallery inside. Participants are encouraged to tour the gallery and be inspired, then create a work of their own. In addition to providing creativity-invoking visuals, the museum is also providing the supplies. Anyone who attends will have access to all the tools they need to complete each project, for free. Sample works done by museum staff and MSU students will also be on display to
help participants understand each art form in focus.
“We also have workshops all the time for free to the public,” McLarty said. “It’s funded by public money, and it all goes back to the public.”
Monday's session involved chalk art. Those who attended had the choice of creating nature illustrations either using chalk pastels on paper or using chalk on the sidewalk. Tuesday’s focus is cyanotype sun prints. Wednesday will focus on creating miniature zines. The final event of the series will be printmaking on Thursday. With such a wide variety of art forms, the series makes for good options for which course to participate in, or provides something for kids to do throughout the week. Each course begins at 10 a.m.
After the Spring Break events, the WFMA will continue to provide creative opportunities to the Wichita Falls community. The museum provides sources of art entertainment and creative outlets throughout the year. Some other events that the WFMA will be putting on include the “On the Wall Workshops”, art panel discussions, “Essential Art Studios,” and “Creative Calm” workshops.
“We’re also going to start a sketchbook club, like a book club, but it’ll be a sketchbook,” McLarty said. “You’ll go off, do some sketches, then come back and share them every other Tuesday.”
