MSU Texas sets record for new first-time, full-time students
Midwestern State University announced Thursday a record enrollment of 925 new first-time, full-time students, a 17% increase over the fall 2023 beginning class. The mark well exceeds the goal of 820 set by officials last year. In total, 934 new first-time students (full- and part-time) enrolled for fall courses. In addition to the large first-year class, the university experienced improved retention of last year’s fall cohort, up 2% from the previous year. Total enrollment for fall is 5,324.
Positive effects from the enhanced recruiting and retention efforts are being seen across campus with full occupancy of open residence halls, a 50% increase in Greek Life sorority bids, record-setting registration for Family Weekend in October, and surpassed budget goals for the year.
“We are excited about the growth we are seeing in our new and returning student populations,” said MSU Texas President Stacia Haynie. “This is certainly reason to celebrate, especially as one looks at the national landscape of declining college-going students. We now turn our focus to building upon this success.”
Student access and success have been at the heart of the administration’s focus over the past year. Using data-driven strategies, officials are identifying how to better serve its student population. Most significant was the announcement in August of a student success initiative anchored by a Military Education Center that garnered support from Sheppard Air Force Base, the City of Wichita Falls, the Wichita Falls Chamber of Commerce, and numerous philanthropic organizations and individuals. The center will provide a comprehensive support network to address the needs of military-affiliated students and their families.
Other positive notes from this fall’s enrollment numbers:
- • 7% increase in new transfer students
- • 20% increase in new undergraduate international students
- • Average semester credit load 11.23 up from 10.73
