Midwestern State University’s student media won 21 awards at the annual Texas Intercollegiate Press Association competition.

MSU junior mass communication major Omar Combie won the Frank Buckley Scholarship as well as the TIPA logo design competition.

Individual students won five first-place awards, six second-place awards, eight third-place awards and two honorable mentions.

“The world has been sideways due to the pandemic, and I am proud of our students for continuing to produce excellent work,” said Jim Sernoe, Mass Communication Department Chair. “It is to their credit that they kept their commitments to the student media and did their best in difficult conditions. A shout-out also to the faculty and staff whose guidance have been invaluable.”

Those earning first-place awards included: Clarissa Alvarado, podcast; Bridget Reilly, news photo; Khirstia Sheffield, in-depth news reporting; Dallas Wabbington, news column; and Cortney Wood, yearbook feature page design.

Those earning second-place awards included: Madison Davis, Jadon Lane and Micah Wilson, documentary; Greta Gottschalk, yearbook news page design; Jadon Lane and Jeromy Stacy, podcast; Brian Lang, newspaper critical review; Reilly, feature photo; and Wood, breaking news article.

Those earning third-place awards included: Combie, newspaper editorial page design; Combie and Brittni Vilandre, newspaper photo story; Combie and Vilandre, newspaper special edition design; Taylor Henson, Carissa Johnson, Michael Maiato and Brendan Wynne, documentary; Armondo Rubio, advertising video; Sheffield, in-depth news reporting; Wood, yearbook sports page design; and Brendan Wynne, yearbook feature page design. 

Those earning honorable mention awards included: Combie and Vilandre, newspaper special edition design; and Rubio, news video.

TIPA is a statewide organization of journalism and mass communication programs. Its annual competition attracts about 75 universities and 750 students.
