Catherine Stringfellow Named 2013 Hardin Professor

Dr. Catherine Stringfellow, professor of computer science, was named Hardin Professor for 2013 during the MSU commencement ceremony May 11. Hardin Professor is the highest honor bestowed upon a faculty member at the university each year.

The Hardin Foundation for Wichita County established the annual award in 1962 for a member of the MSU faculty whose teaching and research of the preceding 12 months has brought distinction to the faculty member and the institution. The award carries with it a stipend of $3,500.

Stringfellow earned her Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Computer Science from Cameron University in Lawton, Okla., a Master of Science in Computer Science from Ohio State University, and a Doctorate of Computer Science from Colorado State University. She also earned a degree in art from New Mexico Highlands University. Stringfellow began her career at Midwestern State in 2006.

In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Stringfellow has refereed numerous conferences and peer-reviewed journals in her field and has been active in professional organizations including IEEE Computer Society, Association for Computer Machinery, Consortium for Computing Sciences in Colleges, and the Wichita Falls Art Association. She has made a number of scholarly presentations at both national and international computer science conferences.

During her tenure at the university, Stringfellow has served on a number of departmental and campus committees, including the University Promotion and Tenure Committee, which she chaired in 2008-2009.

Her research includes collaborations with professionals in the field from Colorado State University, Texas Tech University, and Lund University in Sweden. Jointly they have published 11 articles to date.

Stringfellow is the chair of the Math, Science and U Girls' Conference, an annual event at MSU that teaches junior high school girls about women who have made careers in fields traditionally held by men.

Her volunteer work includes Meals on Wheels, Blessed Sacrament Thrift Shop, Red River Regional Science Fair, Relay for Life, and Habitat for Humanity.
