MILITARY EDUCATION CENTER GRAND OPENING

New centers underscore MSU Texas commitment to student success

Leaders from Midwestern State University, Sheppard Air Force Base, the Wichita Falls community, and the Texas Tech University System celebrated the opening of the Student Success and Military Education Center at the Bridwell Activities Center on April 29.

While celebrating this significant investment in the future of the university and SAFB, leaders took time to praise the results of great teamwork from the two entities and the tremendous generosity of local foundations and individuals. The support from donors and community leaders made it possible for the transformation of the second floor from unused open space into a central support hub for all students. Those early commitments to the project also prompted the Texas Legislature to approve special-item funding to complete the centers.

“What we’re opening today is obviously more than a building; it’s a strong commitment,” TTUS Chancellor Brandon Creighton said. “It’s a commitment that every student who walks onto this campus has the support and the tools and resources and guidance to finish strong and step into a career with real opportunity.”

Creighton said the MEC is very meaningful, noting Texas leads the nation in supporting veterans and service members. This initiative will bolster support for Sheppard Air Force Base and provide invaluable assistance to active-duty military personnel and families as they advance their careers.

Brig. Gen. Paul Filcek, Commander of the 82nd Training Wing and Installation Commander, said there are about 14,000 graduates of tech training per year, and those average serving for 11.2 years, which means 145,000 years of service are produced at SAFB every single year. He’s pleased that with this project, many of those service members and their families will have a chance to further their education at a place that cares about them.

“You’re contributing to something that means a lot not just to Sheppard Air Force Base but to our nation, and we can’t emphasize enough how big that is,” Filcek said. “We are in the profession of servitude to America’s society. In that servitude, to have an organization that actually provides service to us in the spirit and the magnitude that MSU and the Texas Tech system has provided to Sheppard Air Force Base is just off the charts.”

“I know this is going to be fantastic for the service members for them to advance themselves, their education, and their careers,” Texas State Sen. Brent Hagenbuch said. “I know it’s good for the military as a whole, and it’s good for Texas. I’m excited to see it, and I’m more excited to hear the stories of success which come from it.”

Hagenbuch thanked MSU Texas President Stacia Haynie for her leadership in bringing all stakeholders together to bring the vision into focus, where the MEC and the Student Success Initiative are ready for students and to give them the support they need to set up a successful career.

Others who spoke at the event included Dr. Shelley Sweatt, TTUS Regent; Col. Jeff Shulman, Commander of the 80th Flying Training Wing; Mac Cannedy, representing the Bridwell, Bryant Edwards, and Fain Foundations; Leo Lane, chair of the 4A Board; Glenn Barham, chair of the 4B Board; Mike Battaglino, Wichita Falls City District 4 Councilor and president of Sheppard Military Affairs Committee; Ashley Hurst, director of the Student Success Center; Mirry Dak, MSU Texas student; and Major Stephen Schutte, director of the Military Education Center.

The two new centers at the Bridwell Activities Center building will be open for use in Fall 2026.
