Mass Comm Department ranked in Top 10 for documentary production

The Broadcast Education Association has again ranked the Midwestern State University Mass Communication Department in the Top 10 nationally for student achievement in documentary production.

MSU Texas was ranked 10th among the more than 170 universities that have competed in the documentary category over the past five years. BEA determines the rankings based on each university’s cumulative competition performance.

MSU Texas placed in the Top 10 for 2023 as well.

BEA is an international organization of educators and media professionals. It sponsors three annual competitions for students and faculty, as well as conferences and other resources. The competitions typically draw thousands of entries from all over the United States and the world.

Dr. Jim Sernoe, chair of the MSU Mass Communication Department, said most other universities in the Top 10 are considerably larger than MSU Texas. “I have been saying for years that Midwestern State can compete with anyone in the nation, even those schools that are much larger. This ranking shows that we are one of the best programs in the country,” he said.

Professor Leah Gose, dean of the Lamar D. Fain College of Fine Arts, added, “I am so proud of our creative and talented students, and I am honored to work with such dedicated faculty.”
