New MSU Cycling director excited to join program, build on legacy

Midwestern State University’s successful cycling team has a new director, Mario Arroyave, who brings more than 30 years of experience in endurance sports and more than 12 years of coaching experience.

Arroyave said this was a chance to return to his roots and add to the rich tradition MSU Cycling has built over the years. He officially became director on October 1.

“I am extremely excited for the opportunity that I have been afforded to direct the MSU Cycling team,” Arroyave said. “This program has a storied history and is known across the country for its prestige. I want to help continue that legacy with the help of the athletes and the community at large. If you are interested in joining us, please reach out!”

Arroyave began his college sports experience running cross country at Florida International and the University of North Texas. He also competed in college cycling at UNT, where he earned his master’s degree. He has competed locally and regionally in cycling and also had opportunities to race abroad.

"I like the overall atmosphere that collegiate cycling provides for the student-athletes," Arroyave said. "It offers the athletes an environment where they can feel comfortable amongst their peers and really focus on development and learning how to enjoy the sport of cycling."

Arroyave replaces Pablo Cruz Trochez, who guided the program for three years before leaving after the Spring 2025 season to pursue his Ph.D.

Dail Neely served as interim director for the beginning of the Fall 2025 season, which is off to a great start with several victories, starting with the Hotter'N Hell Hundred in Wichita Falls.
