Politics, true mystery topic of two Speakers & Issues events
The Speakers & Issues Series at MSU Texas has two events on the schedule next week.
The first, an oral argument session of the Second Court of Appeals from Fort Worth, will be from 1-3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, in Akin Auditorium. The event is co-sponsored by the Department of Political Science.
Established in 1892, the Second Court of Appeals hears civil and criminal appeals from the trial courts in twelve north central Texas counties: Archer, Clay, Cooke, Denton, Hood, Jack, Montague, Parker, Tarrant, Wichita, Wise and Young. The court consists of a chief justice and six justices but hears the majority of its cases in three-judge panels.
The court sometimes presides in other counties within its jurisdiction for the convenience of parties, attorneys, and the public. The public is invited to these proceedings. The justices will take questions from students and community members regarding the court structure and law school.
The second event is with author Carl Hoffman at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, at the Wichita Falls Museum of Art at MSU Texas. Hoffman’s topic is “Savage Harvest: The Mysterious Disappearance of Michael Rockefeller – Solved.”
Rockefeller, son of New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller, disappeared in 1961. Hoffman’s
book, Savage Harvest: A Tale of Cannibals, Colonialism, and Michael Rockefeller’s Tragic Quest, provides a possible answer. He traveled to New Guinea and lived with a tribe of former headhunters to learn Rockefeller’s fate. The event is co-sponsored by the Department of Mass Communication.
Hoffman is the author of two other books: The Lunatic Express: Discovering the World via Its Most Dangerous Buses, Boats, Trains and Planes; and The Last Wild Man of Borneo: A True Story of Death and Treasure. Hoffman is a former contributing editor to National Geographic Traveler and Wired magazines. His work has also been published in magazines ranging from Men’s Journal to Smithsonian.
Admission is free; donations are welcome. Contact Sally Henschel at 940-397-4731 for more information.
