Governor intends to appoint Montes Martinez as student regent

Governor Greg Abbott has announced his intention to appoint 10 student regents to their respective universities for terms set to expire on May 31, 2021, including Montes Martinez of Midwestern State University.

Martinez, recently named Clark Scholar at MSU Texas, is currently pursuing a degree in accounting and finance. His community activities include participating as a praise and worship team leader at Renuevo Church, as well as volunteering with the St. Patrick’s Day Festival, the Humane Society, Together We Make a Difference, Faith Mission’s Box-A-Thon, MSU-Burns Fantasy of Lights, and the annual Sikes Lake Clean Up.

Martinez is a member of the Redwine Honors Program, Model United Nations Team, Dillard Student Advisory Board, Financial Management Association, Organization of Hispanic Students, Kappa Sigma, Interfraternity Council, and the Rising Mustangs Leadership Program.

Student regent is the highest appointed position of a student at Texas public institutions of higher education. The student regent represents all students, both undergraduates and graduates, for a one-year term on the Board of Regents, the university’s governing board. This position represents students in discussions of key issues in higher education. Although the student regent does not vote, he or she has the opportunity to have important input in decisions affecting the future of the university.

Martinez replaces Andrew Wolf as the student regent.
