Wichita Falls Museum of Art excited to feature acclaimed 'Birds in Art' exhibition
The Wichita Falls Museum of Art will feature “Birds in Art,” described as mesmerizing avian-themed artworks by some of the world’s most talented contemporary artists, from Jan. 10 to Feb. 22.
The international juried exhibition, in its 44th year, is organized by the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wausau, Wisconsin.
“The ‘Birds in Art’ exhibit always brings a wide range of bird representations, and it expands one’s appreciation of different species and behaviors of birds,” said Marcy Brown Marsden, Dean of McCoy College of Science, Mathematics & Engineering. “In my talk on ‘Birds in Art’ that will accompany the exhibition, I will describe how biologists and birders identify and appreciate birds, and how artists can capture the unique qualities of birds.”
The WFMA and director Tracee Robertson are excited to bring another great feature to Wichita Falls.
“The WFMA is excited to host this highly anticipated exhibition that celebrates the intricate beauty and subtle majesty of birds and their natural settings,” Robertson said. “Last spring in my back yard, my family was delighted to watch baby wrens prepared for, born, and weaned, and a baby mockingbird takes its first awkward flights. Something about birds tends to captivate us. Come enjoy the talent of our nation’s artists and engage creatively with the subject matter through one of our many programs.”
Each spring, more than 500 artists submit their work for consideration by a jury of three professionals who winnow the field for the fall exhibition at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum. Jurors for the 44th annual “Birds in Art” exhibition were Jillian Casey, curator of collections, Stamford Museum & Nature Center, Stamford, Connecticut; Luis Purón, executive director, Rockport Center for the Arts, Rockport, Texas; and Robin Salmon, curator of sculpture and vice president of art and historical collections, Brookgreen Gardens, Murrells Inlet, South Carolina.
“We’re pleased to extend this impressive array of artworks to a national audience via the ‘Birds in Art’ 2019 touring exhibition,” said Woodson Art Museum director Kathy Kelsey Foley.
