WFMA to host twins' book signing
Roberta and Rogene Faulkner were identical twins growing up in a small West Texas town during the days of World War II and rationing. The automobile was in its early days and television, computers, and cellphones were not in use.
The twins were able to make their own fun by fooling others about their identity. But they also excelled academically in a way that allowed them to prepare for separate adult careers as leaders and women of science.
The twins, Roberta Faulkner Sund and Rogene Faulkner Henderson, will sign copies of their memoir, Roberta and Rogene: The Intrepid Faulkner Twins from Texas (TCU Press), from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, June 7, at the Wichita Falls Museum of Art at MSU Texas.
As Fulbright Scholars in Germany, the twins developed a great curiosity about how other cultures lived. Later, one twin traveled with her husband and taught throughout the world, meeting royalty and rogues along the way. The other twin went into health research with her husband and served on many national committees of the Environmental Protection Agency and the National Academy of Sciences. As adult women living separate lives, they had the fun of being mistaken for each other in humorous situations.
Henderson and Sund studied chemistry and biology at Texas Christian University and UT-Austin. Henderson has published more than 200 papers and served on numerous advisory boards for national health and environmental groups. Sund taught at the high school and university levels in the United States, and has traveled and taught in London and Morocco. She lives in Wichita Falls.
Following the book signing, the museum's summer concert series Live at the Lake will present musicians Dave Holcomb and the Gypsy Rustlers, sponsored by the Wichita Falls Symphony Orchestra.
