Allen's Faculty Forum to discuss current classical music
Think classical music is all from the days of Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms? Assistant Professor of Music Andrew Allen wants to clarify that classical music is still being produced every day throughout the world during the next Faculty Forum Series at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, in Legacy Hall's Multipurpose Room.
Allen is currently preparing for three world-premiere performances of pieces by internationally renowned composers to occur in Zagreb, Croatia, this summer. "The Faculty Forum presentation will discuss the methods by which musicians and composers work together to craft brand new musical works, using the as-yet unheard pieces as illustrations," Allen said.
He wants the audience to gain a better understanding of the role and influence that contemporary classical music has in everyday lives. He also will illustrate the creative process so the audience might better understand and appreciate that the international world of contemporary music is closer than they might think.
Allen is working with composers Fang Man of China, a Guggenheim Fellow; Franþois RossÚ of France; and Robert Lemay of Canada.
Faculty Forum is a monthly showcase for the research and creative endeavors of the Midwestern State University faculty. It is an opportunity for the campus and Wichita Falls communities to learn, engage, and sometimes discuss the novel ideas and explorations of the talented individuals who teach, discover, and create at MSU Texas. Admission is free and open to all.
The 2017-2018 Faculty Forum committee is Whitney Snow, Eduardo Colmenares-Diaz, and Jonathan Price. Contact Colmenares at eduardo.colmenares-diaz@msutexas.edu or 940-397-4183 for more information.
