In a 2015 review of the Montrose Trio, The Washington Post called their performance "top-notch music-making, as fine as one could ever expect to hear." The trio will be the next guest of Midwestern State University's Music Series at Akin at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6.

The group - Jon Kimura Parker on piano, Martin Beaver on violin, and Clive Greensmith on cello - formed in 2014 and has already established itself as one of the top piano trios in the world. Each member has performed as a soloist with orchestras around the world.

The trio is a collaboration stemming from a long relationship between Parker and the Tokyo String Quartet. Parker was the quartet's final guest pianist before it disbanded, and a backstage conversation with quartet members Beaver and Greensmith led to the trio's creation.

Their name gives a nod to more than one subject - the Chateau Montrose, a wine favored after concerts; the Montrose Arts District of Houston; and the street in Winnipeg where Beaver was raised.

Beaver has appeared as soloist with the orchestras of San Francisco, Indianapolis, Montreal, and Toronto. A top prizewinner at the international violin competitions of Indianapolis and Montreal, he studied with Danchenko, Gingold, and Szeryng. He was a founding member of the Toronto String Quartet, and was its first violinist for 11 years. He is currently on faculty at the Colburn School in Los Angeles.

Greensmith has performed as soloist with the London Symphony, the Royal Philharmonic, the English Chamber Orchestra, and the RAI orchestra in Rome. He has worked with distinguished musicians including Andrßs Schiff, Claude Frank, and Steven Isserlis, and won prizes in the Premio Stradavari held in Cremona, Italy. Greensmith was the cellist in the Tokyo String Quartet for 14 years and also is on the Colburn School faculty.

Parker performs with major North American orchestras on a regular basis, including recent concerto performances with the orchestras of New York, Chicago, and Philadelphia. He also appears in Off the Score, an experimental group with Stewart Copeland, the drummer from the pop group Police. He is artistic adviser of the Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival and Professor of Piano at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University in Houston.

The tentative program includes the "Allegro moderato," "Allegretto," and "Finale: Allegro" of Haydn's Trio in E Major, Hob. XV: 28 (Op. 86, No. 2); "Andante," "Allegro con brio," "Largo," and "Allegretto" of Shostakovich's Trio in E minor, Op. 67; and "Molto allegro e agitato," "Andante con moto tranquillo," "Scherzo: Leggiero e vivace," and "Finale: Allegro assai appassionato" from Mendelssohn's Trio in D minor, Op. 49.

The concert is sponsored by the Perkins-Prothro Foundation and Dale and Joe Prothro with the Lamar D. Fain College of Fine Arts at MSU. The series debuted in spring 2012 with pianist Yefim Bronfman. Cellist Alisa Weilerstein; pianists Inon Barnatan, Alessio Bax, and Lucille Chung; and ensembles such as the Faure Quartett, Emerson String Quartet, and Escher Quartet, among other notable musicians, also have been guests of the series.
