MSU Music to host vocal music events
The Midwestern State University Music Department invites the community to several upcoming events where voices will be in the spotlight.
The first event is a practice recital for seven students who will be competing in the National Association of Teachers of Singing Regional Conference and Competition at Texas A&M University-Commerce Nov. 8-11. The practice recital will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5, in Akin Auditorium.
The next events will be presented by tenor Alan Bowers. Bowers is an acclaimed vocal artist who has performed throughout the U.S. and Europe. His work as singing teacher brought him into contact with many who performed on opera stages around the world, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York City.
Bowers was Phillip Glass' choice for a role in the U.S. premiere of Satyagraha, a performance that Time magazine called the "performance of a decade." He sang the leading tenor role in San Francisco Opera's avant-garde production of Elegy for Young Lovers. He also has sung leading roles with Virginia Opera, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Cleveland Opera, Kansas City Opera, and the New Jersey Opera, among others.
Bowers will present a master class for MSU voice students and the community from 1-4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, and a guest recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16. Both events will be in Akin Auditorium.
