Shao Named 2016 Hardin Professor

Dr. Jianguo Shao, Associate Professor of Chemistry, was named Hardin Professor for 2016 during the Midwestern State University commencement ceremony May 14. Hardin Professor is the highest honor bestowed upon a faculty member at the university each year.

The Hardin Foundation for Wichita County established the annual award in 1962 for a member of the MSU faculty whose teaching and research of the preceding 12 months has brought distinction to the faculty member and the institution. The award carries with it a stipend of $3,500. Shao is the 56th professor to achieve this honor.

Shao received his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Nanjing Normal University China in 1987 and his master's degree from Nanjing University in 1990. He earned his Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Houston in 2001.

Shao taught at Nanjing Normal University from 1990 through 1997, then was a graduate research and teaching assistant, postdoctoral fellow and research associate at the University of Houston until 2005, when he came to MSU. He teaches analytical, general, and environmental chemistry.

In 2009, Shao was named Chemistry Professor of the Year at MSU and in 2001 he received the Dow Chemical Company Fellowship Award for Outstanding Research. He received the Research and Teaching Excellence Award from Nanjing Normal University in 1997.

Shao has had 59 research papers published in peer-reviewed journals and two manuscripts are in preparation. He has presented in 40 regional, national and international conferences, and has been the invited speaker for the chemistry department at the University of Texas at El Paso. He has one approved patent.

Shao has held offices for the Wichita Falls-Duncan chapter of the American Chemical Society, and is a member of the American Chemical Society's Division of Analytical Chemistry, and the Society of Porphyrins and Phthalocyanines. He judges for local science fairs and speaks to junior high and high school science teachers.

At MSU, Shao has served on a number of departmental and campus committees, including the Faculty Forum Committee, Faculty Senate, MSU Research Committee, College of Science and Mathematics College Research Committee, and Biology Graduate Advisory Committee.
