MSU Student Documentary on Wild Hogs Finalist in Regional Competition

A documentary produced by students in Midwestern State University's Mass Communication Department has been named a finalist for a major regional award.

Apex Predator, a documentary about the wild hog problem in North Texas, was a finalist for best video documentary in the South Central Broadcasting Society (SCBS) competition. The program was produced by mass communication majors Shelby Hicks, Miguel Jaime, Dinalee Peterson, and Lauren Roberts.

The SCBS includes universities in a 14-state region.

Dr. Jim Sernoe, Chair of the Mass Communication Department and instructor for the documentary production course, said the award shows that a smaller school like Midwestern can compete with any university. "It shows us once again that we can keep up with schools 10 times our size," he said.

Previous documentaries produced by students in the mass communication department have won awards through the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association, the Southwestern Journalism Congress, the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Press Association and Collegiate Broadcasters Inc. A documentary produced in 2014 won the statewide Barbara Jordan Media Award.
