MSU's Patton Named President of Accounting Association

Dr. Terry Patton, Dean of the Dillard College of Business Administration (DCOBA) at Midwestern State University, was elected president of the Government and Nonprofit Section of the American Accounting Association (AAA) at its annual meeting in Anaheim, Calif., in August.

Patton graduated from Wichita Falls High School in 1980, then graduated summa cum laude with a BBA from MSU in 1984. He received his master's from the University of North Texas, and his doctorate from Texas Tech with a concentration in governmental accounting. He has worked for Mathis, West, Huffines and Co. (now MWH Group), where he was assigned governmental accounting projects.

After receiving his doctorate, Patton served as the research manager for the Governmental Accounting Standards Board, the body that sets financial reporting standards for state and local governments. In 2007 Patton returned to Wichita Falls as the Robert Madera Distinguished Professor at MSU. He was named dean in May 2012.

Patton and his wife, Suesan, are co-authors of the newest edition of Introduction to Governmental and Not-for-Profit Accounting, a widely-used textbook. Patton has served on the boards of First Step Inc., the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Better Business Bureau. He is a member of numerous accounting organizations and currently serves on the Government Performance and Accountability Committee of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Founded in 1916, the AAA is the largest community of accountants in academia with members worldwide. Its mission is to further the discipline and profession of accounting through education, research, and service. The government and nonprofit section serves accounting professors, who specialize in researching or teaching accounting and financial reporting for state and local governments, the federal government, and nonprofit institutions.
