One-man play about Marx comes to MSU

Controversial author, historian, and activist Howard Zinn brings philosopher Karl Marx back to life to explain his theories to a contemporary audience in Marx in Soho. The one-man play will be presented at 7 p.m. Monday, April 8, in Midwestern State University's Akin Auditorium.

Assistant Professor of Philosophy Dr. Nathan Jun said that of Zinn's works, Marx in Soho is especially noteworthy for its honest, personal portrayal of Marx's beliefs. "His ideas are more relevant than ever in an age of unprecedented economic turmoil and uncertainty," Jun said. "MSU and the community have a unique opportunity to enjoy and learn from this brilliant play." Marx is portrayed by actor Bob Weick.

Zinn (1922-2010) wrote A People's History of the United States, a telling of America's story with the words of women, factory workers, African Americans, Native Americans, the working poor, and immigrant laborers. "For over 50 years, Zinn was a tireless champion of poor, marginalized, and oppressed populations and an advocate for peoples' history in both academic and popular culture," Jun said. "His plays, which bring to life the stories of notable but misunderstood historical figures, continue to educate, inspire, and entertain audiences around the globe."

The event is made possible through a grant from the Libra Foundation. Admission is free and open to the public. Students and faculty are encouraged to attend.
