Mike Huckabee to visit campus
Mike Huckabee will visit campus October 4 as part of the 2010-11 Artist-Lecture Series.
From 1996-2007 Mike Huckabee served as the 44th Governor of Arkansas. When Huckabee was sworn into office in July 1996, he was one of the country's youngest governors. He was elected to two full terms in 1998 and 2002 attracting the largest percentage of the vote ever received by a Republican gubernatorial nominee in Arkansas. Huckabee's surprising campaign for the Republican nomination for President in 2008 resulted in a second-place finish to Senator John McCain and established a national following for his conservative principles. After the campaign, Huckabee formed Huck PAC to assist like-minded Republicans in their quest for office.
Before his career in politics, Huckabee served as a denominational leader and pastor. He was the Arkansas Baptist State Convention's youngest president and led rapidly growing congregations in Pine Bluff and Texarkana. He cites these early experiences as guides to the deep problems facing individuals and families. Diagnosed with Type-II diabetes in 2003, he undertook a nationally recognized effort to improve his weight and ultimately shed 110 pounds. As a result of his personal experience and interactions with thousands of people, Huckabee began a national emphasis on healthy and improved lifestyles.
