Psychology professor named Regents' Professor

George M. Diekhoff, professor and chair of the department of psychology, was named Regents' Professor by a unanimous vote of the Midwestern State University Board of Regents on November 6.

The award was established during academic year 2005-2006 to recognize professors who have served higher education for a minimum of 15 years and the university for a minimum of five years, have made exemplary contribution in each of the three areas of teaching, research or creative work, and service, and have gained the respect and admiration of colleagues in the profession. Past Regents' Professors are Michael L. Collins and Kenneth E. Hendrickson, Jr., both professors of history.

Diekhoff earned his Bachelor of Arts from Nebraska Wesleyan University and his Master of Art and Ph.D. from Texas Christian University before joining the faculty at Midwestern State University in 1977 as an assistant professor of psychology. In 1987, he was named Professor of Psychology. He has served as chair of the department of psychology at MSU since 1987 where one of his specialties has been applied psychological research.

In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he has served on more than 40 university committees, many of which he remains a member of today. He continues to serve his community and his profession through a number of community activities and professional activities.

Diekhoff has published 50 books, articles and reviews in the past 30 years. In addition, he has presented more than 40 scholarly papers at professional meetings, and published approximately 80 articles for refereed journals.

"George is one of the rare few who is excellent in the classroom, a prolific and accomplished scholar in his field, and a highly competent and skilled academic administrator," stated Dr. Sam Watson, dean of the Prothro-Yeager College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

In 1992, Diekhoff was honored as a Hardin Professor, an annual award for an MSU faculty member whose teaching and research have brought distinction to the faculty member and the university. In 2005, he was named Alpha Chi Lecturer.

Diekhoff has been married 21 years to his wife Beverly. They have one son, Ben, who is a senior at MSU majoring in marketing.
