MSU honored as 'Business of the Year'

Midwestern State University was recently honored by the Professional Business Women of Wichita Falls as Business of the Year because of its willingness to advance women in their careers.

Midwestern State University has changed dramatically since being established in 1922 as Wichita Falls Junior College. Through five name changes, four locations, and ten presidents, the University has become a respected asset to the Wichita Falls community.

In addition to providing a quality education for 6,300 students (58 percent of whom are female), Midwestern also provides a workplace that encourages female participation. More than 54 percent of those employed at MSU are female. It starts with the hire, but that is often just the beginning for those women who want to advance in their careers. MSU is more than supportive of all employees who want to begin or extend their education. Many women who have started out in clerical positions have progressed to higher levels of responsibility.

Midwestern State is proud of the 28 women who are currently in executive or managerial positions at the university. That means nearly half of those prominent positions are represented by women. In the academic area, women represent four of the seven dean positions on campus. They also represent 47 percent of all full-time faculty.

In addition, the faculty and staff are encouraged to be active members in the Wichita Falls community, and they often choose activities that result in mentoring other women in the area to be productive citizens.
