New scholarship developed to honor heroic efforts
A nursing student is being honored by Midwestern State University and United Regional Health Care System (URHCS) for a heroic act at Turner Falls, OK.
On June 18 Richard Duncan used his Registered Nurse (RN) training to save the life of a five-year-old boy. While vacationing at Turner Falls, he responded to the cries of a mother in chest-deep water holding the limp body of her little boy. After assessing the boy's situation, he began CPR and, after several minutes, was able to bring the boy back to consciousness. He continued life-saving procedures until the local EMT and police departments arrived. The boy was taken to Ardmore, OK hospital. Since that time, he has shown no negative side effects from the ordeal.
Duncan, who is currently employed at United Regional Health Care System, was praised by the police and the EMTs for his heroic efforts that saved the boy's life.
To honor Duncan, a scholarship is being jointly developed by MSU and URHCS. The first scholarship will be awarded at the URHCS Board meeting Aug. 24.
