2009 Hardin Professor named

Dr. James Schuppener, professor of music, was named Hardin Professor for 2009 during the MSU commencement ceremony held May 16.  Hardin Professor is the highest honor bestowed upon a faculty member at the university each year.

The Hardin Foundation for Wichita County established the annual award in 1962 for a member of the MSU faculty whose teaching and research of the preceding 12 months has brought distinction to the faculty member and the institution.  The award carries with it a stipend of $3,500.

Schuppener received his Bachelor of Music Education from Milton College, his Master of Music from Illinois Wesleyan University, and his Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Arizona, Tucson.

Before coming to Midwestern State in 2003, Schuppener was teaching at Southwestern College in Kansas.

In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he directs several choirs including the University Singers, Oratorio Chorus, and Midwestern Singers who have performed concerts on campus, in the community, and throughout Texas and Colorado. He has also performed as a baritone soloist for several churches in the community as well as Booker T. Washington School for Performing Arts in Dallas.

He currently serves on the Midwestern Core Curriculum Committee and the Artist-Lecture Committee.

Schuppener is a member of several professional organizations including Texas Music Educators Association, College Music Society, and Music Educators National Conference.

He currently serves as the Director of Music at Fain Presbyterian Church.
