MSU awarded grant for Texas Governor's School

Midwestern State University is one of three universities in the state recently awarded a $162,000 grant for a three-week summer camp for Texas students who have completed 10th or 11th grade. Students may choose one of two academic tracks: math/science or arts/literature according to their interests and aptitude.

The camp will run July 6-26. It is a residential summer program, and students will be housed in residence halls on the MSU campus. The 100 students who are selected will be provided tuition, housing, entertainment and meals. Only snacks and personal items must be provided by the students. Some travel scholarships will also be awarded according to need.

The theme of the 2008 Texas governor's School is C3 Leadership: to serve and preserve.  In addition to increasing academic skills, the camp will also teach skills in communication and leadership, as well as community service awareness through workshops, lectures, and group projects. Students will also learn about different career options by touring state institutions, museums, and business corporations.

The camp's purpose is to foster interest in college so that more of Texas' students enter and complete college.
