Outstanding Student Awards Presented

The Midwestern State University outstanding student awards were announced at the Student Leadership Banquet April 11. The awards are presented annually to recognize student leadership and academic excellence at MSU. The nominations were made by organizations or academic programs and were based on character, university service, leadership and outstanding scholarship.    

Fadil James Imo and Dinah Saint-Jean were named MSU Man and Woman of the Year.

Imo is an international studies major. He recently represented MSU at the annual summit of the American Student Government Association in Washington D.C. He is president of the Student Senate, a member of the Caribbean Student Organization and MSU Mortar Board, and holds the office of second vice-president of MSU's chapter of the NAACP. In 2007, he brought recognition to the university by winning an Outstanding Delegate Award at the Southwest Model Arab League. Imo volunteers as a mentor for the Wichita Falls Boys and Girls  Club and makes regular visits to local elementary schools through the Good Neighbor Scholar program.

Dinah Saint-Jean, a chemistry major, currently serves as secretary for the American Chemical Society Student Affiliates, historian for the Biology Club, and vice-president of Beta Beta Beta Honor Society. She is an active member of the National American Chemical Society, Math Club, Black Student Union, Caribbean Student Organization, Gamma Sigma Epsilon Chemistry Honor Society and Alpha Chi Honor Society. She is coordinator for the Adopt-a-Family-for-Christmas program and represented MSU at the American Chemical Society National Meeting in Boston.

Outstanding Graduate Man was Ryan Cole Cannedy, a business administration major. He serves as president of Mustangs for Christ, is a member of Alpha Chi and Delta Mu Delta, and is a graduate assistant for the Dillard College of Business Administration. Off-campus, Ryan is an accounting intern at Freeman, Shepard and Story and is a member of the Texas Society of CPA's.

Outstanding Graduate Woman was Casey Elise Stanaland, an accounting major. She serves as treasurer of Delta Mu Delta, is past president and current member of the Accounting Society, and is a member of the MSU Lion's Club and the Honors Program. She is a student member of the Texas Society of CPA's and helps with free tax return preparation for low income families sponsored by the United Way. 

Outstanding Senior Man was Hezron Kimani Wade, an accounting and finance major.    He is vice-president of the Financial Management Association, Senator for the Accounting Society, and a member of the Caribbean Student Organization. Past honors include Outstanding Finance Major. He has volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and has mentored children at the Wichita Falls Boys and Girls Club.        

Outstanding Senior woman was Zahnela De Shawn Claxton, a psychology and Spanish major. She is the Service/Special Interest Chair of the Caribbean Student Organization, Parliamentarian of the Association of Social and Behavioral Sciences, a member of the MSU Lions Club and a member of Psi Chi. She also assisted with the organization of an Easter Basket Drive for the children at Patsy's House and First Step.

Outstanding Junior Man was Alex Pappas and Outstanding Junior Woman was  Kerilyn Alyson Edwards.

Outstanding Sophomore Man was Leonard Benton and Outstanding Sophomore Woman was Britney Lauer.

Outstanding Freshman Man was Jeffrey Garrison and Outstanding Freshman Woman was Sonya Boddie.

The Alumni Award was presented to Jonathan Abel. The Omega Delta Phi Fraternity won the James L. Stewart Service Award and Madeleine Zaehringer won the Viola Grady Leadership Scholarship.
