Two exhibitions slated for the MSU Art Gallery

The University Art Gallery at Midwestern State University will present two exhibitions Out of the Blue and Monochrome: The Study of Orange  in the main gallery, Friday, March 7 through Friday, April 18. The opening receptions will be held in the gallery Friday, March 7 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Curators of both exhibitions were Carol Flueckiger, Assistant Professor Art, Texas Tech University; Robin Germany,  Associate Professor, Photography, Texas Tech University; and Sang-Mi Yoo, Assistant Professor, Art, Texas Tech University.

Monochrome: The Study of Orange is an exhibition that features 14 artists working in a variety of disciplines that are thematically linked by one color, orange, arbitrarily selected by the curators as the theme. By focusing on one color, selections have been made to include such disciplines as sculpture, photography, painting, photography and ceramics.  Although this exhibition celebrates a formal issue; color, it is evident that the artists are using the color orange in unpredictable, poetic and sometimes humorous ways. Contributing artists include: Mary Bausman, Laredo, TX; Shannon Cannings, Lubbock, TX; Gina Dominique, Midland, Michigan; Carol Flueckiger, Lubbock, TX; Deborah Gavel, Albuquerque, NM; Robin Germany, Lubbock, TX; Wes Harvey, Lubbock, TX; Mel Hombre, Lubbock, TX; Joyce Howell, Odessa, TX; Stephanie Lanter, Redlodge, MT; Jane Mahon, Albuquerque, NM; Jonathan Whitfill, Lubbock, TX; Sang-Mi Yoo, Lubbock, TX.

Out of the Blue is an exhibition that explores travel, displacement, nature, technology and intuition.  It features the work of three artists: Carol Flueckiger, Robin Germany and Sang-Mi Yoo who use the phrase "out of the blue" as common ground for a group of paintings, hybrid art and photographs that weave maps, landscapes and figures into a riddled story left to the viewer to decipher.  The exhibition is a playful investigation of media, hue, and image juxtapositions coaxing the viewer through an unexpected dialogue that redefines color.

Also on exhibit in the foyer gallery, Elements + Principles, Friday, March 7 through Friday, April 18. Elements + Principles is a selection of student work over a period of 20 years from the Design I studio class of Elizabeth Yarosz-Ash.
