Mustangs slip to fourth at NCAA Golf Super Regional
MSU opened the round with a blaze, taking the team lead at the turn only to have holes 10-throught-12 prove costly as the Mustangs finished the round tied for fourth in the South Central Region.
MSU made the turn at 15-over as a team, only to see the trio of holes account for four double-bogeys and three bogies that moved the Mustangs from first to sixth.
The Mustangs finished the round on an up note, collecting five birdies on the last three hole to work themselves back to post a 302 round and a 600 total to sit in a fourth place tie with Abilene Christian.
Cameron posted a 288 in the second round to move from fifth to first with a 589 total. St. Edward's added a 294 to move to second at 595, while Central Oklahoma tallied a 302 to slip to third at 298.
Northeastern State is in sixth after holding the first round lead, totaling 306 to tie St. Mary's, while Texas A&M-Commerce is eighth at 634.
The Mustangs were led by Andrew Ludlow during the second round. After posting an 84 on Monday, Ludlow fired a two-over-par 74 for the round. Ludlow eagled the par 4 14th hole, but also had a double-bogey seven on the par 5 12th.
Eric Thompson birdied the 17th and 18th holes to post four-over 76, while Gordon Quebodeaux tallied a 75 and Hunter Linscombe a 77.
Brady Jones, who was tied for sixth after a first round 73, shot a 79 on Tuesday.
Still MSU had four players in the top 20 of the tournament, as Linscombe, Quebodeaux and Thompson are all tied for 13th with a 36-hole total of 151, with Jones tied for 19th at 152. Ludlow stands at 158.
Individually, the lead belongs to UCO's Mitch Boles at four-under 140, with Cameron's Matt Trammell a stroke back at three-under 141 after a 69 on Tuesday. UCO's Brent Cole and ACU's Hugues Joannes are at even-par 144. First round leader Kent Neal of West Texas A&M is tied with Northeastern State's Sam Powell at 145. Neal, who shot 65 on Monday, followed it with an 80 on Tuesday.
In the South Region, host North Alabama stands at 580 to lead that region, with Barry (Fla.) is second at 585, Florida Gulf Coast third at 588, Florida Southern fifth at 590 and Nova Southeastern sixth at 597. West Florida is at 598, with Valdosta State (Ga.) at 601 and Lynn (Fla.) at 612.
Individually in the South, Hernan Borja of Barry, Matthew Galloway of West Florida, Wes Smith of North Alabama and Matt Stauch of Florida Southern are tied at one-under 143.
The top teams from each region advance to the NCAA Division II Men's Championship, as do the next four teams from the two combined regions. The top individual not playing with an advancing team also qualifies for the national event.
