Outstanding students named at Leadership Banquet
The Midwestern State University outstanding student awards were announced at the Student Leadership Banquet April 20. The awards are presented annually to recognize student leadership and academic excellence at MSU. The nominations were made by organizations or academic programs and were based on character, university service, leadership and outstanding scholarship.
Zeno Ferguson and Garolyn Elizabeth Sparks-Freeman were named MSU Man and Woman of the Year.
Ferguson is a manufacturing engineering major. He serves as the advertising and marketing chair for the University Programming Board and senior student senator for the Student Government Association. He is a member of the Caribbean Students Organization, International Student Association, Math Club, Student Ambassadors, Catholic Campus Center, and Society of Manufacturing Engineers. He serves as a peer counselor for Spirit Days, Mustangs Rally and Orientation. Ferguson is also a photographer for the Wai-Kun Yearbook and The Wichitan. In addition to his service on several campus committees, he also volunteers for events off campus including Walk for Life, Special Olympics, Association of Retarded Citizens, and Graffiti Removal at the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge.
Garolyn Sparks-Freeman, a psychology and sociology major, currently serves as vice-president of Gamma Phi Beta, vice-president of Alpha Chi, and membership chair of Mortar Board. She is a member of Psi Chi, Alpha Kappa Delta, Phi Eta Sigma, and Alpha Lamba Delta. She also serves as a Student Ambassador and is the International delegate, vice-president, and treasurer of Rotaract. She was named Gamma Phi Beta of the Year and received the Best Active Award for the organization.
Outstanding Graduate Man was Hoang Duc Bui, a computer science major. He is a member and webmaster of the International Student Association. He serves as president and a Student Government senator for Upsilon Pi Epsilon. Hoang has had several research papers published while at MSU and is currently a member of a research team headed by Mr. Richard Simpson which is presently investigating the automation of archeological pottery fragment reconstruction.
Outstanding Graduate Woman was Elizabeth C. Terrazas-Carrillo, a major in clinical/counseling psychology. She serves as communications officer and vice president for Psi Chi. She is a Spirit Days peer counselor and a Student Ambassador. She is also a member of the Southwestern Psychological Association and the North American Association of Master's Level Psychologists. She is a volunteer and translator for First Step.
Outstanding Senior Man was Byron Thomas Webb, a social work major. He is president of Social Workers Acting Together and Phi Alpha. He is a member of Alpha Chi and Pi Sigma Alpha. He also serves on the Steering Committee of the National Association of Social Workers, is an advocate for Child Advocates and is a donor/fundraiser for the Rainbow House of Wichita Falls.
Outstanding Senior woman was Randi Niccole Roanhaus, a B.A.A.S. major. She is a member of the National Sigma Kappa Sorority Gamma Tau Chapter, Alpha Chi, and MSU Opera Workshop and University Singers. She serves as president of the MSU Choir Organization and is a Student Ambassador. She is involved in numerous volunteer activities such as the Alzheimer Memory and Cancer Memory Walks and with the Main Sea Coast Missionary Society for medical funding.
Outstanding Junior Man was Jacob Allen Staples and Outstanding Junior Woman was Haley Shea Lain.
Outstanding Sophomore Man was Austin Ross Howard and Outstanding Sophomore Woman was Dinah Saint-Jean.
Outstanding Freshman Man was Robert Travis Stegner and Outstanding Freshman Woman was Lindsey Ann Patterson.
The Alumni Award was presented to Erin Kathleen Short. The Catholic Campus Ministry won the James L. Stewart Service Award and Zeno Ferguson won the Viola Grady Leadership Scholarship.
