MSU Golfers earn NCAA Regional Berth

            WICHITA FALLS, Texas - In it's first season after being resurrected, the Midwestern State University golf team has earned an invitation to the NCAA Division II Tournament.

            The NCAA announced Friday that the MSU linksters were chosen as one of the eight teams to represent the South Central Region in the 2007 NCAA Division II South/South Central Super Regional at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at The Shoals in Muscle Shoals, Ala., May 7-9.

            Midwestern State finished the regular season ranked seventh in the region.  The top eight teams from the region were chosen to compete along with the top five individuals in the region whose teams did not qualify.

            St. Edward's earned the South Central region's top seed, followed by Central Oklahoma, Abilene Christian, Northeastern State, Cameron, St. Mary's, MSU and Texas A&M-Commerce.

            The individuals include Pat McCarthy of Southwestern Oklahoma State, Kent Neil of West Texas A&M, Tyler Kimrey of East Central (Okla.), Rodolfo Gamino of Lincoln (Mo.) and Mack Hamilton of Southeastern Oklahoma State.

            The Mustangs are led this season by second-team All-Lone Star Conference golfer Logan Scarlett.  The freshman from Throckmorton sports the team's best scoring average at 74.84 strokes per round, ahead of junior Hunter Linscombe of Katy at 75.25 and junior Gordon Quebodeaux of Houston/North Shore at 75.27.

            Joining the South Central region in the super regional is the South region, with West Florida as the top seed, followed by Nova Southeastern (Fla.), Florida Southern, Florida Gulf Coast, Barry (Fla.), Valdosta State, host North Alabama, and Lynn (Fla.).

            The super regional is a 54-hole tournament, with one 18-hole round played each day.  The team champion of each region earns a berth in the NCAA Division II Championships to be contested May 22-25 at The Meadows of Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Mich.

            Additionally, at-large berths to the national tournament are awarded to the four teams with the lowest scores between the combined South and South Central regions that did not win its region and a medalist berth is granted to the low individual in the super regional whose team did not advance to the national tourney.
