Mustangs stand fifth after first day at KickingBird

Jones, a junior from Gilmer, holds the individual lead at five-under-par 135, tied with St. Edward's Blake Slaughter. Jones opened the rainy day with a two-under 68, then came back with a three-under 67 to lead the Mustangs. Slaughter reversed the scoring with rounds of 67 and 68.

The duo is a stroke ahead of St. Mary's Jimmy Willingham in third at four-under 136.

Mustangs junior Hunter Linscombe of Katy and freshman Logan Scarlett of Throckmorton are next for MSU in 17th at three-over 143. Scarlett had rounds of one-over 71 and two-over 72, while Linscombe opened with a four-over 74, then fired a one-under 69.

Junior Gordon Quebodeaux of Houston/North Shore posted a 77-73--150, while freshman Eric Thompson of Jacksboro tallied an 82-73 to stand at 155.

As a team MSU is 11 strokes off the pace set by team leader Abilene Christian. The Wildcats turned the first two rounds in even-par 560, while St. Mary's and host Central Oklahoma are tied for second just two strokes back at 562.

Edward's is in fourth at 564, then MSU fifth in the 15 team field.

The tournament concludes on Tuesday with a single 18 hole round.
