MSU WOMEN SHOCK

ABILENE
CHRISTIAN 66-50

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - The Midwestern State University Mustangs put themselves back into Lone Star Conference Women's Tournament contention as they surprised the Abilene Christian Wildcats 66-50 Wednesday night at Gerald Stockton Court in D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

MSU (11-10, 4-5) moved into a three-way tie for fourth in the Lone Star Conference South Division with the victory over ACU (13-10, 4-5).

The Mustangs were led by the 16-point, five-rebound performance of senior Sonya Calhoun-Courtney, while senior Stacey Staten nearly double-doubled with 11 points and eight rebounds with four assists. Freshman Andrea Buben had 10 points with four boards as well.

ACU got 16 points from Alex Guiton and Lacey Blau double-doubled with 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Wildcats.

The team battled to a 12-all draw midway through the first half of action. That's when MSU found it's shot.

Junior Andi Richardson buried a three-pointer and Calhoun-Courtney ripped off three straight field goals as the Mustangs jumped on a 19-1 run over nine minutes of the half, grabbing a 31-13 lead with 2:47 to go in the first.

ACU battled back by Staten's three at the buzzer gave the Mustangs a 36-18 lead at intermission.

MSU dominated most of the second half, building a 26-point 62-36 advantage with 4:22 remaining.

However the Wildcats would not go quietly, and finished the game with a 14-4 run.

MSU shot 39.3 percent from the floor (22-of-56), but hit 7-of-18 threes and made 15-of-25 free throws. The Mustangs held ACU to just 32.2 percent from the field (19-of-59), with only 3-of-17 from the arc (17.6 percent) and 9-of-13 from the floor.

ACU outrebounded MSU 45-40.
