Mustangs split games to open TWU Tournament
MSU (4-3) got a great day at the plate by leadoff hitter Cheyanne Paschal who went 5-for-7 over the two games with a walk and catcher Lindsey Voigt who went 4-for-5 with a home run and 2 RBI.
Freshman pitcher Katie Petersen got both decisions while allowing only one hit with 10 strikeouts in 8 2/3 innings.
Petersen ripped St. Ed's in game two with a one-hit shutout, striking out six and facing two batters more than the minimum thanks to an error to go with the hit.
Voigt's solo homer to start the second inning was all Petersen would need. MSU added four in the fourth inning thanks to Voigt's bases-loaded single followed by Kelli Shaw's bases-clearing three RBI triple to right.
However, game one against Texas Woman's was a disappointment as Petersen was charged with the loss without allowing a hit.
With the game tied at 3-all and two outs in the eighth inning, TWU had runners on second and third thanks to an MSU passed ball, a walk and a stolen base. TWU's Kaley Frye grounder in the infield turned into an error by Mustangs first baseman Jessica Rodriguez that allowed Amanda Emory to score from third to win the game.
The tournament will wrap up Sunday with the consolation game at 10 a.m. and the championship game at 12:30 p.m.
