Mustangs beat Southwestern Oklahoma 90-67

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State University held Southwestern Oklahoma State University scoreless for five of the final six minutes of the game as the 24th ranked Mustangs broke open a tight game to down the Bulldogs 90-67 in Lone Star Conference Tournament quarterfinal action Tuesday at Gerald Stockton Court in D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

MSU (21-6) shot 57 percent from the floor in the second half on the way to shooting 53 percent for the game as the South Division's top seed held the North Division fourth seed Bulldogs (17-10) to just 35 percent from the floor.

The Mustangs got identical 16-point, 12-rebound double-doubles from senior Eric Dawson and junior Chris Davis.

Dawson
notched his 20th double-double of the year with six blocks and three assists.
Davis
added three assists, a block and a steal.

MSU senior Drew Coffman led all scorers with 22 points with four assists, while senior Chad Rickett tallied 17 points with five assists.

Southwestern
Oklahoma
State
was paced by Clarke Hale with 17 points and three steals, while Michael Sampson came off the bench with 13 points and nine rebounds.

Midwestern
State
jumped out to a 4-0 lead to start the game and never looked back.

After leading by 10 midway through the half, the Mustangs saw SWOSU go on an 11-6 run to pull within three at 26-23 with 7:55 before intermission.

That's when the Mustangs clamped down on defense and rolled on offense. A

layup started a 15-0 run over the next four minutes.

MSU took a 45-28 lead into the half.

The Mustangs led by 16 points with 15:20 to go, when Southwestern went on a 20-9 run to cut that lead to just four with 10 minutes to play at 63-59.

But MSU got a Russell Button layup to stem the tide, then allowed SWOSU just eight more points in the contest.

The win puts the LSC Tournament semifinals and championship game in

Wichita Falls
on Friday and Saturday. Tickets for the weekend went on sale immediately following the game and will be available in the MSU Athletic Office beginning Wednesday.

Central Oklahoma
at 8 p.m. on Friday. UCO, the North number two seed, defeated

The first semifinal at 6 p.m. Friday features

Southeastern
Oklahoma
State
against the winner of the West Texas A&M/Texas A&M-Commerce quarterfinal.

The championship game is set for Saturday at 7 p.m. between the semifinal winners at Ligon Coliseum.
