Mustangs edge No. 23 Texas A&M-Kingsville 76-73
KINGSVILLE Texas - Midwestern State University junior Chris Davis buried a three-pointer from the left baseline corner with 5.4 seconds to play to beat No. 23 Texas A&M University-Kingsville 76-73 Saturday evening in Lone Star Conference South action.
MSU (12-3, 1-0) snapped the Javelina's 10-game home-court winning streak with victory and gave the Mustangs a nine-game win streak.For the 23rd ranked Hoggies (13-3, 0-1) it was their second consecutive loss.
The game was tight throughout as both teams battled a week-long layoff due to weather delayed games.
The Mustangs trailed 32-30 at the half, but came out of the intermission on fire.
After swapping scores with the Javelinas, MSU went on a 14-6 run to grab a seven-point lead with 11:39 to play as Jeremy Ford nailed a three-pointer.
The Mustangs upped that lead to eight on a Drew Coffman jumper a few minutes later, but the nationally-ranked Javelinas would not stand for it.
The Hoggies Ricky Huckaby hit the first of three straight three-pointers as part of a 9-2 run to pull within a point with 8:51 to go and the game was on.
The game was tied at 64 when TAMUK's Wendell Mulkey hit one of two free throws with 5:22 left.MSU went on a quick 7-2 run to hold a five-point 71-66 lead with 2:15 remaining.
Midwestern held a four-point advantage with 1:35 to play when Huckaby hit one-of-two from the charity stripe, then the Javelina's Remi Yusuf swiped an MSU pass, converting it to a layup with a foul with a minute to go.
After both squads missed shots, the Mustangs got the ball with 37.4 seconds to play.
After advancing the ball up floor and running off nine seconds, MSU called a timeout.
Midwestern got the ball in the hands of Chad Rickett who worked the ball in for a shot in the lane.But the senior, who has two other game-winners this season, saw his path was blocked and dished the ball to Davis who coolly buried the game-winning three.
Still the Mustangs had to defense the Javelinas, who worked the ball upfloor to get Huckaby a three-point shot that clanked off the rim at the buzzer.
Davis led MSU with 15 points and six rebounds, leading five players in double-digit scoring.Rickett collected 14 points with four assists, Drew Coffman and Christopher Reay each added 13 points.Eric Dawson chalked up 10 points and six boards for MSU with three blocked shots.
Huckaby tallied a season-high 23 points for the Javelinas, with 17 points and five rebounds for Mulkey and 10 points for Yusuf.
It was the second time this season MSU has beaten a nationally-ranked team away from home.
MSU returns home to face Eastern New Mexico on Thursday, tipoff set for 8 p.m.
