Tarleton State downs Mustangs Women

STEPHENVILLE, Texas - The Tarleton State University TexAnns went on a 12-1 run midway through the first half to take the lead over the Midwestern State University Mustangs and never looked back as TSU beat MSU 74-44 to open Lone Star Conference South play.

MSU (5-4, 0-1) saw its three-game winning streak snapped by the TexAnns (6-0, 1-0).

The Mustangs trailed by 12 at the half, 36-22, but cut the deficit to just eight at 43-35 with 12:33 to play on a free throw by Brandi Bush.

But Tarleton answered with a jumper from JoAnne Jones to spark a 10-1 run over the next two minutes and MSU couldn't recover.

MSU shot just 33 percent from the floor for the game (15-of-45), while TSU hit 49 percent from the floor, including 37 percent from the three-point arc.

Midwestern
State
was led by junior Kaylon Hodge with 14 points, while senior Sonya Calhoun-Courtney scored 11 points with five steals. Bush led MSU with six rebounds and five steals as well.

TSU got 16 points off the bench by Shardae O'Neal, while Katie Crawford added 13 points and Brittnie Haley had a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds.

MSU concludes first semester play on Tuesday in

against St. Edward's. Tipoff time is set for 6 p.m.
