Mustangs Women defeat Incarnate Word 55-48
WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State University never trailed in the second half, but had to fight off a stubborn University of the Incarnate Word squad as the Mustangs returned from a holiday break with a 55-48 win over the Cardinals in non-conference play.
MSU (7-4) claimed it's fifth win in the last six games with the triumph, while the Cardinals (3-8) lost another close contest.
MSU built leads of 13 and 11 points during the second half, only to see UIW go on an 8-0 run over a five-and-a half minute stretch to lead only 48-46 with 2:37 to go.
But Brittni Burks buried a top of the key three-pointer with 216 to play to hold off the Cards.
After a layup by UIW's Nia Torru moved the Cardinals back within three, senior Sonya Calhoun-Courtney collected a layup and two free throws in the final 28 seconds to seal the win.
Calhoun-Courtney led the way for Midwestern with 22 points and five rebounds, while freshman Andrea Buben added 12 points. Brandi Bush led MSU with 11 boards.
Incarnate Word got 15 points from Ieasha Sledge and Torru double-doubled with 13 points and 14 rebounds.
MSU shot 42 percent from the floor, while holding UIW to just 27 percent shooting.
