MSU 18th in Final Regular Season Poll

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - The Midwestern State University football team jumped into the top 20 in the national rankings this week.

 

The Mustangs (9-2) climbed to 18th in the final regular season American Football Coaches Association Division II Poll after beating former No. 18 Abilene Christian 46-30 last Saturday.

 

In fact, the two teams flipped positions, as ACU (9-2) fell to 22nd.Fellow Lone Star Conference South foe West Texas A&M moved up to ninth.

 

There was no change in the top eight in the final regular season poll heading into the first week of the NCAA Division II Championship as defending national champion Grand Valley State (Mich.) (11-0) retained the top spot, followed by defending runner-up Northwest Missouri State (11-0), and North Alabama (10-0) third.NWMSU had two first place votes and UNA received one number one vote.

 

North Carolina Central (11-0) is fourth, with Shepherd ( W.Va.) (10-0) fifth and Bloomsburg ( Pa.) (10-1) sixth, Chadron State ( Neb.) (11-0) seventh and North Dakota (9-1) eighth.

 

Thanks to a Newberry (S.C.) 10-0 loss to Presbyterian (S.C.) that dropped them from nine to 12, WT climbs to ninth, with Valdosta State ( Ga.) (8-2) tenth.

 

Valdosta State and No. 14 Pittsburg State ( Kan.) (9-2) are the highest ranked teams that were not awarded a berth in the NCAA tournament.No. 17 Tiffin ( Ohio) (10-1), No. 23 Bemidji State ( Minn.) (9-2), No. 24 Indiana ( Pa.) (8-2) and No. 25 Carson-Newman ( Tenn.) (8-3) were also not invited. Bemidji State and Pitt State will play in the Mineral Water Bowl on Dec. 2.

 

No. 18 Midwestern opens first round play in the NCAA Division II Championships at home against 15th ranked Missouri Western State on Saturday afternoon at 12 noon in Memorial Stadium.Tickets are on sale at the MSU Athletic Office or by calling 940-397-4779.
