No. 6 West Texas A&M edges No. 24 MSU 29-27
CANYON, Texas - A pair of costly turnovers spelled the difference as the sixth ranked West Texas A&M University Buffaloes handed no. 24 Midwestern State University Mustangs a 29-27 loss before a WT homecoming crowd of 16,481 at Kimbrough Stadium Saturday night.
West Texas A&M (6-0 overall, 4-0 in all LSC games, 2-0 in the LSC South) scored a go-ahead touchdown when Kolo Kapanui grabbed a one-yard pass from Dalton Bell to grab a 29-27 lead with 2:30 to play.
After the kickoff, MSU quarterback Rahsaan Bell threw downfield for a jostled DelJuan Lee, but the overthrow was intercepted by safety Darnell Johnson.
WT then ran out the clock.
MSU's other turnover came when the Mustangs led 20-17 in the third quarter.With the ball inside the WT 30 after driving following an interception by MSU's Darrius Borrters, a bad snap caused a busted play where Mustang quarterback Rahsaan Bell fumbled a handoff to end the drive.
WT turned the gift into a 10 play, 70-yard drive to score on a 30-yard pass to Shaun Scott-Jones from Dalton Bell.
The game went about as billed after the first quarter.The teams, who entered the game averaging 950 yards a game, accounted for just 114 total yards and four three-and-outs.
Then the offenses kicked in.
MSU gained 422 yards, while WT posted 402 total yards for the contest.
MSU's Bell completed 17-of-24 passes for 194 yards with two touchdowns, but suffered just his second interception of the year.Daniel Polk was effective in his opportunities, hitting 7-of-10 passes for 138 yards and a touchdown.Polk added 21 yards rushing, to lead the MSU rushing attack.
Lee collected six passes for 170 yards and one touchdown for the Mustangs.He also scored the opening touchdown for MSU on a nine-yard run in the opening moments of the second quarter.Mookie Davis also hauled in six passes for 85 yards.
Keith Flanagan and Ulysses Odoms also caught scoring passes for MSU.
WT's Bell threw for 366 yards on 42-of-58 passes with four touchdowns and an interception.
Maurice White added 62 rushing yards, while Ramon Perry caught 11 passes for 66 yards.
The loss knocks MSU from the unbeaten and snapped a four-game winning streak in Canyon.
Midwestern State looks to bounce back next Saturday when it hosts Tarleton State at Memorial Stadium in Wichita Falls.Kickoff for the Salute to the Military game is 7 p.m.
