Mustangs women advance at LSC Tournament

- Midwestern State University scored two first half goals then held on to defeat Angelo State University 2-1 in the first round of the women's Lone Star Conference Soccer Tournament Thursday at Tom Thompson Field.

MSU (10-7-1) got on the board first in the 15th minute as Michelle Harris got the rebound off Kari Bristow's shot and put it past ASU goal keeper Becky Martin.

Then less than five minutes later, Katy Luckert took advantage of Bristow's shot off of Martin and scored again to give the fifth-seeded Mustangs a 2-0 advantage.

(12-6-1) got on the scoreboard in the 68th minute when Kristen Boister's throw-in was headed into the goal by Rambelle Ashley Tatum to pull the tournament's fourth seed within a goal.

Midwestern outshot ASU 17-10, as MSU goal keeper Heather Primavera posted four saves. Martin recorded seven saves in addition to the two goals allowed.

The other first round game of the tournament saw third-seeded Texas A&M-Commerce beat sixth seed

Eastern New Mexico
4-1. A&M-Commerce advances to meet second-seeded West Texas A&M on Friday at noon.
