Golfers place third in Texoma Match Play

KINGSTON, Okla. - The Midwestern State University Mustang golfer picked up a big win on Tuesday to finish third in the inaugural Texoma Match Play Championship at the Chickasaw Pointe Resort.

MSU went to the final hole to beat West Texas A&M 5-4 to take third in the tournament that used Ryder Cup-style match play scoring.

The Mustangs changed their lineup and defaulted the number one position after Jason Bender could not play due to an injury during Monday's second round.But the play of Andrew Ludlow came through.

Ludlow had all of his shots count in the during the four-ball competition, as he was paired with the withdrawn position.He defeated the WT number 1-2 team of Thomas Maldonado and Spud Dillingham, 1 up to give MSU the win.

Ludlow also defeated Dillingham in singles, 2-and-1.

MSU's Brady Jones and Gordon Quebodeaux, playing in the number five and six positions, also won their matches.

Jones defeated Kent Neal 1 up, while Quebodeaux downed Jonathan Shelley 4-and-3.The Jones/Quebodeaux team beat Neal/Shelley 3-and-2 in the four-ball.

WT's Ray Holdeman beat Eric Thompson 2 up at number three and Jon Musser defeated MSU's Hunter Linscombe 2 up in the other singles matches.Holdeman/Musser also defeated Thompson/Linscombe 4-and-3 in the four-ball.

"It was exciting," said MSU golf coach Jeff Ray."The match play was fun for the kids because they don't normally play that way.It's a different and exciting format and it wasn't decided until the last hole."

Central Oklahoma</place /> won the championship of the tournament by beating Abilene Christian 5 1/2 to 3 1/2.
