But it was the first six minutes of the second half that put Midwestern in the driver's seat.
Just two-and-a half minutes into the second, MSU's Sun Potter won a scramble at the top of the box and beat FLC goal keeper Tom Donley in a one-on-one for a two goal lead.
Three minutes later in the 51st minute, Scott Leonard stole the ball deep in the offensive end and blasted a 26-yarder from the right side to beat Donley on the left as MSU put the third goal on the defending champs who had allowed only one goal this season coming into the game.
The MSU defense was nearly perfect, keeping the defending champs from getting many clean shots. MSU out shot FLC 13-11, but FLC had only four shots on goal.
Midwestern goal keeper Jeremy Turner chalked up two saves, while the MSU team was credited with a save as well. Cunliff had four saves to go with his three goals allowed for the Skyhawks.
In the opener of the SSC-RMAC Challenge Classic, Colorado School of Mines defeated West Texas A&M 1-0.
