Willson, Tigert earn special honors as 8 Mustangs earn all-conference honors
WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State claimed its first Lone Star Conference championship last weekend in Irving and the Mustangs were well represented when conference officials handed out all-conference awards on Monday afternoon.
Brittany Willson was named pitcher of the year in the LSC North, while Brady Tigert was named coach of the year for the second time in his three-year tenure at MSU.
Willson, a 5-11 starting pitcher from Burkburnett, posted a 29-8 record with a career-best 1.33 ERA. She led the conference with 261 strikeouts while allowing 206 hits in just over 241 innings.
Also named to the first team was junior catcher Racheal Jackson and junior designated player Amanda Hill.
Freshman first baseman Jessica Rodriguez, sophomore Kristen Stonecipher and senior Stephanie Wardlaw were named to the second team.
Rodriguez, one of only two freshmen to earn all-conference honors, carried a .305 average with 12 doubles, two homers and 28 RBIs.
Stonecipher led the Mustangs in most offensive categories. The third baseman will take a .400 average, 16 doubles, nine homers and 42 RBIs into the NCAA Division II South Central regional.
Wardlaw, a center fielder, has a .324 average with seven doubles and four triples.
Junior shortstop Kelli Shaw and sophomore right fielder Chantelle Lee received honorable mention.
The Lady Reds also claimed the division's newcomer of the year with outfielder Shaelyn Moore taking the honor.
Texas A&M-Kingsville's Kassie Rezza was named the South's player of the year, while Abilene Christian's Jennifer Leal was named pitcher of the year.
