Women's Soccer announces signing class

WICHITA FALLSTexas - Team speed and depth were central to the needs outlined by
Midwestern State University

women's soccer coach Jeff Trimble after finishing the 2005 season with a 9-9-2 record.

Trimble announced a recruiting class of 12 Wednesday afternoon that includes five midfielders, three goalkeepers and a pair of forwards and defenders.

"This is a really solid class," Trimble said. "They all come from good programs and are really good on the ball."

The class has a decidedly local flavor with six players coming from the

Wichita Falls

X-press '88 club squad, including Rider High standouts Kate Lukert, Chelsea Sawyer and Megan Ruddy and Wichita Falls High's Amy Smith and Jaime Pompey. Erika Weatherly also competes on the club team, but is home schooled.

"These girls compete in one of the better leagues in

Dallas

," Trimble said. "And they are very fast. There's a lot of speed in this class and that's something we need."

Sawyer led the Lady Raiders with 28 goals on her way to being named the District 5-4A offensive player of the year.

Pompey will bring speed to the back line after being named the District 5-4A defensive player of the year.

"Chelsea and Jaime's play speaks for itself," Trimble said. "

Chelsea

scored a lot of goals which is something we need."

Smith and Lukert also earned first-team all-district honors while Ruddy was named to the second team.

Trimble addressed the team's need for depth at the outside midfield position with the signings of Denton High's Ashley Hornisher, Plano Senior High's Megan Hanlon and Flower Mound Marcus' Katherine Bernick.

"Hornisher and Hanlon are built on the same talent and they are quick getting down the field," Trimble said. "Bernick is very composed in the back."

Gorman's Kari Bristow will give the Mustangs another presence in the central midfield.

"She can take all the restarts and is very skilled on the ball," Trimble said. "She'll give us a boost centrally."

Trimble will look to a trio of keeper commitments to push Heather Primavera for the honor of replacing all-conference keeper Elli O'Dwyer.

"There is no lack of confidence in Primavera," Trimble said. "You can never have enough keepers. It's rare to have a keeper that's healthy all the time."

Canyon High's Ashley Meek, Weatherford (Texas) High's Katlin McDaniel will join Weatherly in competition for playing time in between the posts next season.
