Willson, Kuchenski spin shutouts, No. 11 MSU sweeps Northeastern State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas- Brittany Willson and Ashley Kuchenski pitched consecutive shutouts to lead the Midwestern State University Mustangs to a sweep of Northeastern State in Lone Star Conference North Division play Saturday at the Sunrise Optimist Complex.

Willson (18-5) allowed five hits while striking out seven and walking none in a 3-0 win for MSU in Game 1 to earn her sixth shutout of the season.

Kuchenski (11-3) limited the Lady Reds to six hits and struck out four for her third shutout of the year in a 1-0 win in Game 2.

The No. 11 Mustangs improved to 29-8 on the season and 12-4 in the LSC North, while Northeastern  State,dropped to 15-17 and 4-8.

Midwestern State used a series of bunts after Chantelle Lee lined a one-out single to right field to break open a scoreless game in the sixth inning.

Lee advanced to second on Allison Tidwell's sacrifice bunt, moved to third on Stephanie Wardlaw's bunt single and scored after Kristen Stonecipher beat out a squeeze bunt to give MSU a 1-0 lead.

The Mustangs would add another run when Wardlaw scored when Jessica Rodriguez reached on a throwing error. Stonecipher gave the Mustangs a 3-0 lead, scoring on Kelli Shaw's grounder to short stop.

India Williamson took the loss for the Lady Reds despite limiting MSU to one hit in the first five innings. The junior right hander allowed two earned runs on four hits.

Stonecipher's two-out single to right-center field in the third inning of Game 2 plated Tidwell for the lone run in the nightcap.

Tidwell drew a one-out walk before advancing to second on Wardlaw's ground out to third base.

NSU's Stevie Bailey suffered the loss despite limiting the Mustangs to one run on three hits.

Wardlaw provided two of MSU's four hits in the opener, while Stoncipher accounted for two of the team's three safeties in the second game.

The Mustangs return to action Monday afternoon against Oklahoma Panhandle State in Goodwell, Okla. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m.

MSU returns home on Saturday when it plays host to Angelo State in a twin bill at the Sunrise Optimist Complex. First pitch will be at noon.
