Students take top honors at TIPA competition

Midwestern State University's newspaper and broadcasting programs both won the sweepstakes competitions at the annual Texas Intercollegiate Press Association conference, held April 6-8 inSan Antonio.

 

 

Sweepstakes are the top awards in the competition, honoring the schools that have accumulated the most points overall.  This is the first time MSU has won the top awards for newspaper and broadcasting in the same year.

 

 

This the third year in a row the newspaper program has won sweepstakes.  The broadcast program last won sweepstakes in 2000, 2001 and 2002.

 

 

MSU's weekly newscast "Campus Watch" was named top television newscast in the state, with individuals winning seven additional awards.  The weekly newspaper The Wichitan was named second for overall excellence, with individuals winning 19 additional awards.

 

 

The Wichitan also won second place in Best of Show.

 

 

Eight additional MSU students won awards for on-site competitions.

 

 

 

Students earning first place awards included:  Ri'Chaele Affannato, David LaPell and Julie Wineinger, television public affairs program; Ya-Rei Chan, newspaper news photo; Candy Mathis, newspaper advertising design; Randall Mobley, radio announcing; Randall Mobley, radio sports writing; Camron Rushin, newspaper news story; Camron Rushin, newspaper opinion page design; Camron Rushin, newspaper single subject presentation; Crystal Sanchez, newspaper sports news feature; Jennifer Tavlian, newspaper sports column; Jennifer Tavlian, newspaper sports news story; and Sunkyu Yoo-Norris, newspaper illustration.

 

 

Students earning second place awards included:  Amy Augspurger and Matt Jackson, television sportscast; Paige Dickerson, newspaper editorial; Staci Good, Matt Jackson and Rachel Jacobs, television documentary; Katie LaFreniere, radio commercial writing; Katie LaFreniere, radio news writing; Micaela Lechuga, television news writing; Ashley Miller, newspaper in-depth reporting; Sunkyu Yoo-Norris, newspaper information graphic; Priscilla Porras, television non-feature story; Camron Rushin, newspaper page one design; Jason York, newspaper critical review; and Mirand Zepeda, newspaper news feature story.

 

 

Students earning third place awards included:   Jason Calder, Jennifer Tavlian and Jessica Weiss, television production; Ya-Rei Chan, feature photo; Staci Good, Matt Jackson and Rachel Jacobs, television public affairs program; Jennifer Tavlian, newspaper sports page design; and Jared Wilson, newspaper editorial cartoon.

 

 

Students earning honorable mention awards included:  Ri'Chaele Affannato, television feature story; Zeno Ferguson, newspaper picture story; Candy Mathis, newspaper advertising design; August Schuman, public relations press release writing; and Kalen Tubbs, print sports writing.

 

 

TIPA is a statewide organization of approximately 75 collegiate journalism and mass communication programs.
