MSU Softball sweeps Southwestern Oklahoma
WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Sarah Huddleston lined an RBI triple down the right-field line and then scored on Amanda Hill's fourth-inning groundout to provide the difference in Midwestern State's 3-1 win over Southwestern Oklahoma State in the opener of Thursday LSC North Division doubleheader at the Sunrise Optimist Complex.
The Mustangs then used a three-run first inning to catapult over the Bulldogs in the nightcap by a score of 7-2.
MSU improved to 36-9 on the season and 14-4 in the LSC North, while Southwestern Oklahoma dropped to 10-33 and 6-16.
The No. 21-ranked Mustangs have now one nine of their last 10 games and will play host to No. 16 Abilene Christian Thursday afternoon at the Sunrise Optimist Complex. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
MSU returns to division on Saturday when it travels to
Kristen Stonecipher, who went 3-for-4 at the plate in the opener, put the Mustangs on the board when her line driver down the line alluded the right fielder and bounded to the wall. Stonecipher slightly hesitated while rounding third, but beat the throw to the plate for an inside-the-park home run.
Southwestern Oklahoma countered with a run a run in the third before Huddleston delivered her run-scoring triple to highlight a three-run fourth for MSU to make a winner of Brittany Willson.
Willson improved to 22-5 on the season by completing her 22nd game of the season. The senior from Burkburnett allowed five hits, struck out nine and walked one.
MSU jumped on Southwestern Oklahoma starter Kaci Carpenter in Game 2 with three runs in the first.
Jessica Rodriguez and Rachel Jackson knocked in runs with consecutive doubles, two of MSU's six doubles in the night cap. Kelli Shaw added an RBI-single to stake Ashley Kuchenski to a 3-0 lead.
The Mustangs didn't stop there. Amanda Hill and Chantelle Lee fueled a two-run second with back-to-back doubles and Huddleston added a two-run double in the third.
Kuchenski made the lead hold by scattering eight hits and holding the Bulldogs to single runs in the second and sixth innings. The sophomore lefty struck out five and walked one to improve to 14-4 on the season.
